Before I arrived in Beijing, I imagined the city to be a dynamic, fast-paced and diverse
place which would offer me an interesting mix of modern and ancient culture. I was
definitely not disappointed. The most unique areas in Beijing that I've experienced are
definitely the 'hutongs' - these are an enchanting maze of historic alleyways and
courtyards which offer different sights around every corner. I've also enjoyed the
experience of early-morning activities that happen across various public parks, for
example the games, folk dancing and exercise classes in Ritan park that locals take part
in every morning. Along with the fascinating and well-preserved local traditions, there is
an exciting sense of modernity and progress in the city. My favourite place to see the
best of this is the 798 art district which showcases the best of modern urban Chinese art.
